Store bought croutons are perfectly fine, but I always seem to have extra bread that can either be used for making breadcrumbs or croutons, and making them is so easy. If you use the right spices they can be quite delicious.
I like to use Herbs de Provence and garlic, which gives them a nice spicy flavor.
Here’s how we make them.
Dice up some stale bread. This can be done in advance, if it’s dry enough, and store in a bag. If it’s not quite dry enough you can leave it out or put in the oven at a very low setting until it is dried out enough.
Heat3 T. olive oil in a pan and add your spices, about a T. of Herbs de Provence, ½ t. salt, dash of pepper and a clove of garlic.
Add bread cubes and toss. Toast on low heat until browned to you preference. Add to your favorite salad.
- 4 C White bread
- 2 T olive oil
- 2 T Herbs de Provence
- 1/2 t salt
- 1/2 t black pepper
- 1 garlic clove
- Cube dried bread. If not completely dried, toast in over until dry. Add olive oil and rest of ingredients to pan and heat to medium. Add croutons and toss on medium heat until as brown as desired.
