I’m not sure why these are called funeral sandwiches (other than it feeds a crowd and might be something you would take to a funeral? Wonder if there’s such thing as funeral salad? Funeral soup?) but no matter. They are very good, and flexible for serving crowds (and even how you cook them!)

King’s Hawaiian rolls. Yum!

Slice the full set of rolls in half horizontally. Or try to get half. This is harder than it looks…Putting them in disposable half pans makes them very convenient for camping or entertaining (they fit perfectly in chafing dishes).

Add 2 layers of ham, about 10 slices. This is really to taste but the hammier, the better, I think. I used deli black forest ham, but I’ve also made these with leftover Honeybaked ham, that was also good.

Two layers of sliced Swiss cheese. This is 9 slices. I like mine particularly cheesy.

Put the top back on. Some people slices them at this point but I do not because I find all the sauce ends up on the bottom, and the top gets dry.

6 tablespoons melted butter, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons brown mustard (I used homemade spicy brown mustard), 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 3/4 teaspoon onion powder, and of course I cranked it up a notch with some cayenne, 1/2 teaspoon but we like it spicy around here.

Mix

And pour. Cover with foil (I like to spray the foil with oil so it doesn’t stick.) They’re better if you leave them overnight to marinate.

These aren’t as pretty as normal, because I cooked them on a campfire!! In the oven they get more nicely browned on top (and I usually hit them under the broiler for a minute before serving. Bake at 350 for about 35-40 minutes, then broil for a minute if you like the tops brown. Slice into individual sandwiches and serve.
These are great for parties because they keep very nicely in a chafing dish. It doesn’t even have to be a funeral!
Funeral Sandwiches
Ingredients
- 3/4 lb sliced ham
- 3/4 lb sliced Swiss Cheese
- 12 King's Hawaiian Rolls
- 6 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper to taste
Instructions
- Slice Hawaiian rolls horizontally. Layer ham and Swiss cheese (I like to do 2 layers of each) on bottom half of rolls. Add top half back to the top. Mix 6 tablespoons melted butter, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons brown mustard (I used homemade spicy brown mustard), 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 3/4 teaspoon onion powder, and of course I cranked it up a notch with some cayenne, 1/2 teaspoon but we like it spicy around here. Use less if you do not. Spread sauce on top of rolls, and cover with foil. Preferably marinate overnight. Bake at 350 degrees (covered) until ham is hot and Swiss cheese is melted. I like to put under broiler (uncovered) for a minute to really brown the top. Cut into individual sandwiches and serve.
